Who runs Remera
Remera is provided by Remera Studio Ltd, a company registered in England and Wales (company number 17382067), whose registered office is at 128 City Road, London, EC1V 2NX. We're the data controller for the personal information described in this policy.

What we collect, and why
We only collect what's needed to run the features you actually use. Nothing here is sold or shared for advertising, and we don't use any usage-analytics tool.
Account details: your email address, and if you sign in with Apple or Google, the name/ID they share with us. Used to create and secure your account; you can't use Remera without one.
Your garden content: everything you choose to record, including garden names, areas, plants, wildlife sightings, projects, tasks, moments, photos, and any notes or dates you add. Beyond what a form requires, all of it is optional, and you can edit or delete any of it at any time.
Photos: resized on your device before upload and stored securely. Only a reference to each photo, not the photo itself, is kept anywhere else. Attaching a photo is always optional.
Postcode and one-off location: each garden needs a postcode, typed in or found with a one-off "use current location" tap (never continuous or background tracking). We use it to check the postcode is real, to show local weather, and, if you use Ask Remera, so its answers suit your area.
Local reminders: if you turn on a reminder for a task, it's scheduled directly on your own device using your phone's own notification system. This never involves sending anything to us.
Care plans and reminders: if you answer a plant's care-plan questions (for example, whether it's planted yet), your answers are saved with that plant so you aren't asked twice. If you turn on "Tell me when it's time", the reminder is scheduled on your own phone, like task reminders, and nothing is sent to us. Care-plan guidance comes from checked sources, not from AI.
Camera: Remera opens its own camera only when you tap Take photo. Photos you take are treated like any other photo you add.
Voice (only if you use the microphone): if you tap the microphone in Ask Remera, what you say is turned into text so you can send it as a message. Where your phone can do this itself, nothing leaves your phone. On phones that can't, the audio is sent to Apple's (iPhone) or Google's (Android) speech service to be turned into text, under their own terms. Remera never receives or keeps the recording, only the text you choose to send. You'll be asked for microphone and speech permission the first time, and you can turn it off at any time in your phone's Settings.
AI features (Ask Remera, Garden Story, and plant and wildlife identification)
Remera includes optional AI features. You have to actively choose to use each one; none of them run automatically or in the background:
- Ask Remera: a chat assistant you can ask questions about your own garden, or tell what you've done. We send your message, a short recent conversation history, and a bounded selection of your own garden records, including your gardens' names and postcodes, to our AI provider to generate a reply. If you add a photo to your message, the photo is sent too. If you've set up weather, the next few nights' forecast low temperatures for your gardens may be included, so Remera can mention frost. The first time you use Ask Remera, we ask you to read a short notice and we record that you accepted it, and when.
- Garden Story: an optional "Refresh Story" button that writes a summary of a garden's history, built the same way.
- Plant and wildlife identification: an optional "Identify" button, and photos added with the + button. A single, reduced-size photo is sent to be identified. You always review, edit or discard the suggestion before anything is saved.
Our AI provider. All of these features use OpenAI. OpenAI's account-level model training and data-sharing settings, which we control and have checked directly, are switched off, as is their separate API-call-logging setting. OpenAI also keeps a copy of API requests and responses for up to 30 days for abuse monitoring, then deletes them. This is their default for every API customer, and we have not applied for the exemption some larger customers can arrange. So nothing you send is used to train their models, and we don't keep it on our servers — but it isn't immediately gone from OpenAI's side either.
We don't store the content of your questions, your conversation, or photos sent for identification on our own servers afterwards. We do keep a daily count of how many AI requests your account makes for each feature, with the model used and the request's size, but never what was in it. We use this to apply fair-use limits and keep costs under control, and it's deleted with your account.
What Ask Remera can do for you. When you tell Ask Remera about something, for example "I saw a robin today", it can save it straight away: a sighting, a plant update, a new plant or creature, or a journal entry if you ask for one. You'll see what was saved, with Undo and Edit. It can also offer to tick off, move, skip, archive or rename things, each with Undo. Jobs it suggests are always shown to you to check and date before they're saved. Nothing is deleted by Ask Remera.
Limitations: AI-generated answers, stories, and identifications are for general informational purposes only. Never rely on an AI identification to decide whether something in your garden is safe to eat, touch, or handle. Always check with a qualified expert.
Weather
We look up the local forecast for each garden's postcode to show on Home. Your postcode is converted to approximate coordinates by postcodes.io, and those coordinates are sent to the Met Office (via their DataHub weather service) to fetch the forecast. Neither call sends your account details, name, or any garden content, only the coordinates.
Launch updates (signing up on our website)
If you sign up for launch updates at remera.app, we collect your email address and use it to send you an email when the Remera app is available, plus occasional updates as we get ready to launch. We do this because you asked us to, and you can withdraw that permission at any time.
How signing up works. After you enter your email, we send you a message asking you to confirm. You're only added to the list once you tap the link in it, so nobody can sign you up without your say-so.
Who holds the list. Our list is kept by Brevo, an email service based in France that stores its data in the EU. Brevo sends the confirmation email and our launch updates on our behalf.
What we keep ourselves. We keep a record of when you signed up and which wording you agreed to, so we can show you gave your permission. This record doesn't contain your email address itself: we store a scrambled form of it that can't be turned back into the address. We keep this record even after you unsubscribe, as evidence that you agreed. Email us and we'll delete it.
Email tracking. We've set Brevo not to track whether any individual opens our emails or clicks their links. Links in our emails may still pass through Brevo's servers, which Brevo uses to protect its service against abuse.
Unsubscribing. Every email we send has an unsubscribe link, and one tap takes you off the list. You can also email hello@remerastudio.com.
What signing up doesn't do. It isn't connected to a Remera app account, and it doesn't reserve early access or any offer. We won't use your email for anything other than Remera's launch and our preparations for it, and we'll never sell or share it.
Beta tester emails
If you're testing Remera before launch, we keep your email address and first name on a separate list so we can email you about the beta: new versions, what to try, and how to tell us what you think. We do this to run the beta you agreed to join. It isn't marketing, and this list isn't joined to the launch-updates list.
The list is kept by Brevo, which sends these emails on our behalf, with the same settings as above: it doesn't track whether any individual opens our emails or clicks their links. Every email has an unsubscribe link. Unsubscribing stops these emails but doesn't remove you from the beta. Apple and Google send their own invitation emails for TestFlight and Google Play under their own terms.
Third-party services we use
| Who | What for | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Google Firebase | Stores your account and garden data | UK/EU data region |
| OpenAI | Powers Ask Remera (including any photo you add to a message), Garden Story, and photo identification | US-based |
| Apple / Google speech recognition | Turns your speech into text, only if you use the microphone and your phone can't do it itself | Apple's/Google's own terms |
| postcodes.io | Looks up your postcode's approximate location | UK-operated |
| Met Office (DataHub) | Provides the weather forecast | UK public body |
| Apple / Google Sign-In | If you choose to sign in this way | Apple's/Google's own terms |
| Sentry | Helps us see and fix crashes and errors | EU data region |
| Namecheap | Hosts our support inbox | US-based, with EU/UK safeguards |
| Brevo | Sends launch-update and beta-tester emails and holds those mailing lists | EU (France, Germany and Belgium) |
Crash reporting
If the app crashes or hits an unexpected error, a report is sent automatically to Sentry to help us fix it. No screen recordings, no screenshots. Network activity in a report only ever shows which service was contacted, never the content, addresses, or document details involved. Your name and email are never included.
International data transfers
Most of your garden data stays in a UK/EU Google Cloud region. Some processing involves data leaving the UK/EU: OpenAI (US) for AI requests; Namecheap (US) for our support mailbox, with EU/UK Standard Contractual Clauses in place; and Met Office's DataHub, which runs on Amazon Web Services infrastructure (the Met Office, a UK public body, has a general commitment not to transfer personal data outside the UK/EEA without appropriate safeguards). If you use the microphone and your phone can't turn speech into text itself, Apple or Google may process the audio under their own terms. We don't claim all processing stays within Europe.
How long we keep your data
- Your garden content: kept until you delete it, or your account.
- Ask Remera / Garden Story / identification requests: the content is not retained by us at all.
- AI use counts: a daily count per feature (no content), kept with your account and deleted with it.
- Voice: nothing. Remera never receives the recording.
- Operational logs: around 30 days, technical details only, never your notes, photos, or AI conversations.
- Crash reports: a period set by our crash-reporting provider's own account settings.
- Launch updates: your email address stays on our Brevo list until you unsubscribe. The record of your agreement is kept afterwards unless you ask us to delete it.
- Beta tester emails: your email address and first name stay on our Brevo tester list until you unsubscribe or the beta ends, when we delete the list.
- Backups: a short-term technical backup, a rolling few days, purely to recover from our own faults, not to reverse a completed account deletion.
Deleting your account
You can request account deletion at any time from Settings. There's a 14-day grace period: cancel any time in that window and nothing is deleted. After 14 days, deletion begins and can't be cancelled; everything is permanently removed within 24 hours. This is irreversible.
Exporting your data
You can export your account and garden information at any time from Settings, as a downloadable file you can open in any spreadsheet app.
Your photos are listed in that file but not included in it. You can save copies of them to your device separately, also from Settings, with each one filed under the date of the record it belongs to. Photos are saved at the size we store them, which is smaller than your camera original.
Once you've saved or shared the exported file, what happens to it next is outside our control.
Your rights
You can ask us to tell you what we hold about you, correct anything wrong, delete your data, or receive a copy. Contact hello@remerastudio.com for anything not covered by the in-app self-serve options. If you're unhappy with how we've handled your data, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
Children
Remera isn't intended for children under 16. During our current private beta, everyone who has access has been personally invited by us.
Security
Your garden data is only accessible from your own account. Data is encrypted in transit and at rest by our infrastructure provider.
What we don't do
We don't record or keep your voice. We don't use any usage-analytics or tracking tool in the app, and we don't track whether any individual opens our emails or clicks their links. We don't sell or rent your data. We don't use your garden content to train AI models.
Beta status
Remera is currently in private beta, tested by a small number of invited users. Features, and this policy, may change as the app develops.
Changes to this policy
If this policy changes, we'll update the date above and notify you in-app for material changes. That includes before any new AI provider, paid subscription, or significant new data use goes live, not after.
